MTC Work

mtcAs I’m learning more and more about Web Design and using standards, I’ve come to realize that I’m not the most innovative of people. Sure I can follow along in a tutorial, and maybe even do some half way original ideas, but overall it’s all pretty much the same old.

For example, I’m working on the new look for the MTC Web site. You’ll notice that the small screenshot I’ve placed there on the left is very similar to my proposed design for the Ukraine mission site. Yeah, not that original.

I think the next thing that I need to teach myself to do is work things out on paper before hand. That way I can completely work on the site and how it should work and flow. I need to be better about planning out what is I’m going to do in great detail so that I’m not making it up as I go along. This applies to many things in life besides just design.

    That is so true. As I develop new applications, designs, etc. for websites, I find I get lost in the application I’m using. I’ve found I’m most effective with a pad and pencil, doodling out my design, my “flowchart”, etc. Developing a design “from scratch” in a layout or drawing program (Photoshop, Fireworks, etc) actually suppresses my productivity and creativity. I’m not sure why that is, or if it is just me, but it seems to hold true as a general principle.

    And computers and technology were supposed to make things faster!
